Wind Energy

The Power of Wind

The power of the wind has been harnessed for thousands of years. As technology has advanced, the wind has been used for grinding grain, pumping water and providing electricity to farms beyond the reach of power lines. Today, wind farms use the energy contained in prevailing winds to generate electricity for homes and businesses.

Our businesses’ wind projects foster economic development and demonstrate Berkshire Hathaway Energy’s commitment to renewable energy and environmental respect. Through our subsidiaries MidAmerican Energy Company and PacifiCorp, we are No. 1 in the nation in ownership of wind-powered electric generation among rate-regulated utilities.

Wind as a Resource

MidAmerican Energy has approximately 7,700 megawatts of owned wind generation capacity in operation. The energy is generated by more than 3,400 turbines across the state of Iowa.

Capacity Expansion

PacifiCorp continues to add new wind and renewable resources to the grid as it advances a reliable, clean energy future. PacifiCorp has approximately 2,400 megawatts of owned wind capacity in operation.

Delivering Wind Energy

Local Economic Impact

MidAmerican Energy has been investing in renewable energy adding clean, environmentally friendly wind to its generation mix at no additional net cost to its Iowa customers. With nearly 3,500 turbines operating across 38 wind projects, MidAmerican Energy’s wind fleet provides long-term economic sustainability across 33 Iowa counties:

  • Approximately $54.4 million was paid in property taxes on wind turbines in 2024
  • Approximately $44.9 million was paid in easement/lease payments to primary and neighbor landowners for wind projects in 2024
